The importance of using Heritage techniques and materials?

Bricks and mortar come in a variety of styles and source materials depending on the history of your structure.

Sourcing the right materials are imperative to the aesthetics and structural integrity of a building as every style of brick will require a completely different custom mortar to suit its history and load bearing capabilities.

Damaged Brickwork

Cement is one of the many leading causes to accelerated degradation to some of the UK’s most beautiful historical buildings.

Revered for its super strength and load bearing capabilities, the hidden complication of cement is its extreme resistance to moisture and high strength working negatively with heritage bricks.

The high water resistance within cement mortar forces any moisture into the bricks by over saturating their capillaries to the point of eroding, and in freezing temperatures can cause them to burst/crack.

The reason for this is that heritage bricks are fired at lower temperatures so require a Lime Mortar that is breathable. If you have damaged brickwork contact Stageman now.
