“Pointing” is the term used to describe the mortar between the bricks within a wall or masonry structure. Repointing is the act of removing old and damaged mortar to then replace it with new mortar, making the masonry work structurally safe as well as being historically accurate or more aesthetically suitable.<\/span><\/p>

Which type of pointing does my house need?<\/strong><\/span>
STAGEMAN specialises in all aspects of repointing, and there are many factors that we will use to determine the structurally and historically correct type of pointing for your building.<\/span><\/p>

– BINDER: Quicklime (used for Hot Mixes), Pure Lime Putty, Natural Hydraulic Lime (NHL 2, NHL 3.5, NHL 5<\/span><\/p>

– AGGREGATE<\/strong> (Sands): Well Graded, Uniformly Graded, Sieved Sand \/ Fines (defined to a max size by millimetre precision), Marine Sand, Quarry Sand, Kiln Dried Sand, Colour additives & Ochres<\/span><\/p>

Which style of pointing does my house need?<\/strong><\/span>
One of our specialists will be able to identify the pointing on your brickwork from a visit or even by emailing pictures to us.<\/span><\/p>

My house is a listed building and the conservation society need the exact match, what can i do?<\/strong><\/span>
If you call\/email STAGEMAN Brickwork we\u2019ll arrange a time and day suitable to visit, we can even take a sample of the mortar to run a \u2018Acid Digestion\u2019 Test to clarify the purity\/type of lime used and, define the grading of aggregate through a specialist process; As well as the initial test we can examine the structure to find the original pointing used.<\/span><\/p>

Info about Heritage Pointing:<\/span><\/h3>

Aesthetics: Heritage pointing is flush to the arris of all bricks, can be bright white to dark (grey or caramel hue) with semi-fine aggregate, brushed to give a beautiful textured finish.<\/span><\/p>

Heritage Pointing is a lime based mortar with a semi-fine aggregate – for example: Bed joint 10mm to aggregate size 3mm max. Using a combination of graded aggregates and lime will create desired texture and colour<\/span><\/p>

Info about Double Struck \/ Birds Beak\u00a0Pointing:<\/span><\/h3>

Aesthetics: Double Struck gives a smooth diamond headed \/ triangular finish that protrudes from the joint, aesthetically this i where it got the nickname ‘Birds Beak’. The triangular contour creates a s straight shadowing effect which gives the illusion that the joints are thinner and straighter than they actually are. First used in the 15th century it was hugely popular in Tudor times to give badly laid brickwork a refined and uniform feel.<\/span><\/p>

Double Struck (Birds Beak) pointing uses a lime based mortar using a finer aggregate to allow the shaping of the triangular joints with a smooth finish. Using a combination of graded aggregates and lime will create desired texture and colour.<\/span><\/p>

Info about Weather Struck Pointing:<\/span><\/h3>

Aesthetics: The bottom of the bed-joints are pointed flush to the arris of the lower brick or if a straighter edge is required then a small overlap is pointed then cut with a straight edge (as seen in the picture above). The same method is done to the perp joints by flushing or cutting the right hand side.<\/span><\/p>

Weather Struck pointing uses a lime based mortar and finer aggregate if the edges are to be cut. If a larger aggregate is used then joints won’t be able to get the fine cut (if that finish is required). Using a combination of graded aggregates and lime will create desired texture and colour.<\/span><\/p>
